hosting with purpose

WE DON'T NEED MORE SHORT-STAY RENTALS; WE NEED BETTER ONES...

- Louise Freckleton, Kestrel Nest/ Highfield Farm

There is much noise in the short-stay rental space at present; it's as if every second person is opening a holiday rental property,

so we wanted to share some important information about the operation of our beautiful cabin - Scandi at Maleny.

If you've been following us for a while, you'll know that we put a lot of effort into ensuring we host our property with purpose; we are mindful, conscientious, and committed to helping others where we can.

Sustainable Tourism takes complete account of its current and future economic, social, and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.

WE ARE SUPER EXCITED TO SHARE THAT SCANDI AT MALENY IS PROUDLY CARBON-NEUTRAL!

We've offset our carbon footprint (as of 30th June 23) and partnered with Carbon Neutral, the longest-standing carbon offset provider in Australia. We're active participants in their Plant-a-Tree program, contributing to restoring the Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor.

We feel so strongly about our social responsibility that we want to operate the cabin along the most environmentally-aware and sustainable philosophies. We hope this adds to the luxury experience our guests expect when staying with us, and hope they're further encouraged by how simple it can be to be a little more mindful and perhaps have their own transformational experience due to staying with us.

We hope to inspire a new, conscientious way of travel and for guests (like you) to have the option to travel for the good of the world, community, Country, and self.

SHORT TERM ACCOMMODATION

We know that there is a terrible housing crisis around Australia, and we wanted to highlight that our cabin's location has been zoned as short-term accommodation only by our local council.

This means no one can reside at the property permanently, therefore not taking away accommodation options from anybody in need.

ELECTRICAL

The cabin's been fitted with energy-saving LED lighting and sensor-enabled air conditioners.

COMMERCIAL CLEANING PRODUCTS

Our commercial cleaning products are also Australian, Eco-friendly, chemical-free, natural & organic, and biodegradable.

GREY WATER

Our greywater passes through an STP system which is used to irrigate the gardens at the property.

NO PRINTED MATERIAL

We operate 99.9% digitally, reducing the need for single-use printed material in the cabin. You won't find advertising pamphlets and our compendium is totally digital.

LINE DRIED

We line-dry our linens 9.99 times out of 10 and only resort to dryers when it's been raining non-stop for extended periods.

COMPOSTABLE

We supply compostable kitchen cloths and hygienically wash and rotate them up to 3 times before they are composted; these can break down in a month in the correct conditions.

GREAT WRAP

In the kitchen, we provide Great Wrap – The only compostable stretch kitchen wrap made from food waste and only use landfill compostable bin liners for rubbish.

OZ HARVEST

We continue to remain extremely committed to donating 50 meals to our friends at Oz Harvest Sunshine Coast for every booking we take on behalf of our guests.

Check the counter at the top of this page for our current tally!

WATER SUPPLY

We source our water supply from our 20,000L rainwater tank, which is not connected to mains water.

DOMESTIC CLEANING PRODUCTS

We provide domestic cleaning products from ZeroCo for our guest's convenience; their containers are made from recycled materials destined for oceans and landfill, and their products are Aussie, Vegan & Cruelty-Free.

COFFEE PODS

The coffee pods we provide are Australian and compostable and also delicious!

GREEN ENERGY

We power the cabin using green energy (rated 4.5/5 by Greenpeace).

WHITE GOODS

The cabin has been fitted with a dish draw style dishwasher to help reduce water consumption needed when cleaning dishes, especially when only minimal items are used over a few days.

FABRICS

Our towels are 100% Australian cotton and a part of the Better Cotton mission. Our bed linens come from Australian suppliers that are either carbon neutral, green sustainable, or hold SA8000 certification compliance.

SINGLE-USE

We supply single-use condiments in Bio Pak containers and try as hard as possible to avoid single-use 'anything' at the cabin.

TOILETRIES

Our guests are supplied with toiletries that are made from bamboo and as well as take-home reusable cotton rounds as face washers.

1% FOR THE PLANET

We are also very proud to partner with 1% for the Planet and commit to donating at least one percent of our annual profits to a local not-for-profit organisation.

We genuinely feel this slow stay is good for your heart, soul, and, ultimately, our planet, and we hope to stand out from the rest by doing better and not just hosting short-stay accommodation for profit but hosting with heart.

So, if any of this resonates with you, please share us, and please talk about us, and we hope you not only research the destination of your next holiday but consider whom you book with and support businesses that are hosting purposefully in this over-saturated space.

You know where to find us for your next luxury Sunshine Coast Hinterland getaway, and the good news is that you'll find a few more properties around the country with owners approaching hosting mindfully too.

We look forward to sharing the cabin with you soon!
